I know I am not alone in signing up for the gym and not going even half as much to justify the cost or buying a workout DVD with the best intentions but having it still in the wrapping 6 months later.
We’ve all done it and what I have learnt as I have got older is that the gym isn’t for everyone, and that is ok! There are so many alternatives online or in an app these days that you can do for free!
Amazing!
There really is no excuse not to try something new. This is an incredible advancement in home fitness but can also be a little overwhelming. I love a home workout, especially this year, and I have been trying out loads of new and different options to see what works best for me.
The best advice I can give you is to do the same, try new things and see what gives you the required results.
… and by ‘required results’, I don’t mean the perfect, insta-ready body – I mean being healthy and able, in whatever that means to you – everyone is different and that is something that needs to be celebrated.
Here are 5 of my go-to free home workout options for you to try to get you started – but branch out and make sure that you comment below with any gems that you find, so that we can all give them a go!
Yoga With Adrienne
I have been using the ‘Yoga With Adrienne’ YouTube channel for years on and off. She has a great array of videos for every time of day, fitness/experience level and she even has videos of meditations and yoga to relieve stress and anxiety. I would really recommend her beginners videos for those who want to give Yoga a try or who need something gentle to wake them up in the morning!
Here is a great beginner video to get you started:
Couch To 5km
I have taken on the Couch To 5km so many times, with varying levels of success, but I would recommend it! It is an app that has a structured running plan that gets you from couch potato to running for 30 minutes – amazing! I am currently attempting this challenge again and although, anyone who knows me will tell you, I am not a natural runner – this app is really working for me. It’s free, it’ structured, it encourages you throughout the run and builds your confidence as it builds your fitness. I know people who have started with this app and are now running marathons! If you think running might help you on your fitness journey, then this is a great place to start.
You can find out more, find a link to the app and also download the structure in podcast form here: https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/exercise/couch-to-5k-week-by-week/
FitOn App
I am a big fan of this app, there is a huge range of workouts to suit whatever area you want to target or whatever type of exercise you enjoy. Plus, you can get the app to structure a programme for you based on your needs and wants in your fitness journey. I have the app on my phone, but you can also access the workouts online – so sometimes I play them on my laptop to see them on a bigger screen.
If you are starting on your fitness journey or want to build on what you have done previously then I fiercely recommend this app!!

Fightmaster Yoga
Another Yoga YouTube channel, this one was actually a recommendation from my sister. This channel is all about showing up and giving it your best. The motto for Fightmaster Yoga is “it’s not about the pose.” So, it takes away the pressure of being the perfect yogi – which of course you won’t be when you start out.
Why not try this morning routine instead of your coffee tomorrow and see how it changes your day?
Challenge Apps
I have done my fair share of ‘Challenge apps’ in my time. I think they are great if you want to target a specific area. I love a squat challenge to build that booty (!!) but there are loads of different ones out there, so whatever your goals – there is probably a challenge out there for you. Some examples of the sorts of challenges you can partake in are:
Fitness Challenge
Plank Challenge
Ab/Six-pack Challenge
Squat Challenge
Push-up Challenge
Jump Rope Challenge
And more!
