Who we are
We are Small World, Big Cause, a blog and information site that explores how we can connect with the natural world to make our lives full and sustainable. Run by founder Rebecca Hansell, with various guest writers contributing ad-hoc. We were establish in 2017.
What personal data we collect and why we collect it
We do not actively collect any personal data from you during your visit to the site, however we do analyse the website use via Google Analytics. We only use this information to analyse our performance as a platform and would not share the information externally.
If you sign up to our newsletter or undertake a course or other service offered on the site, we will collect your details to fulfil the relevant request. We will not pass these details on.
Our newsletter is currently sent through the platform ‘MailChimp’, you will be added to the list so that we can keep you up to date on relevant information from the site. You can unsubscribe from the newsletter anytime, however, we will still contact you regarding courses that you may have signed up for to ensure that you are happy with the service you have recieved.
We will also recieve your information if you choose to contact us via email or the contact form on the site. This information will only be used to contact you regarding your enquiry.
This site is run by WordPress who do not collect any personal details about visitors, however, some of the plugins that I have used may. For transparency the plugins I have installed at the time of writing this are:

- WP SuperCache
When visitors leave comments on the site, WordPress collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.
After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.
If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.
If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.
When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.
How long we retain your data
If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.
For users that sign up for a newsletter or service, we will keep this data on record so that we can follow your journey with Small World, Big Cause.
What rights you have over your data
If you have a relationship with this site (through email opt-in or sign up to a service or course), or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.
Where we send your data
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.
How we protect your data
We ensure that any files or documents that contain personal data are password protected and not accessible by anyone not part of Small World, Big Cause. Our compouters are also fully updated with the latest anti-virus and anti-hacker security.
In the unlikely event of a data breach, we will ensure that any affected parties are contacted immediately so that necessary action can be taken. We will also evaluate why it happened, learn from the incident and put new safety measures in place.
